SINGING PARAJANOV

A musical, literary, and visual creation by Michel Petrossian, developed in collaboration with video artist Marc de Pierrefeu and inspired by the world of Sergei Parajanov. The performance brings together the twelve virtuoso singers of the French ensemble Musicatreize, under the direction of conductor Roland Hayrabédian.

The music draws inspiration from Parajanov’s artistic techniques and merges with animated collages that intertwine with the voices of the Musicatreize singers and the composer himself. Titles from Parajanov’s films and letters, alongside texts by Jean-Luc Godard, Federico Fellini, Sayat-Nova, and the composer, sung in Armenian, French, and Italian, accompany this journey as a creative homage to the man who declared: “I shall take my revenge on the world through love.”

• Michel Petrossian is a French-Armenian composer, writer, and scholar whose work brings together music, literature, history, and the legacy of ancient civilizations. Winner of the prestigious Queen Elisabeth International Composition Competition, he is the author of numerous symphonic, vocal, operatic, and film works performed on some of the world’s most distinguished stages. His artistic language is marked by cultural richness, originality, and a profound engagement with historical narratives.

• Roland Hayrabédian is among France’s most distinguished conductors in the field of contemporary vocal music. Founder and Artistic Director of the renowned Musicatreize ensemble, he has collaborated with leading European orchestras, ensembles, composers, and stage directors. He is particularly celebrated for his commitment to contemporary creation and for premiering hundreds of new works.

• Founded in 1987, Musicatreize has grown into an internationally acclaimed ensemble dedicated to contemporary music and artistic innovation. Having commissioned and premiered more than 300 works, it has become a major force in the vocal arts, renowned for its bold programming, close collaborations with composers, and distinctive artistic identity shaped by the spirit of the Mediterranean. Since 2020, Musicatreize has also been home to the National Center for Vocal Art of Southern France.

• Marc de Pierrefeu is a Paris-based filmmaker, videographer, and photographer. His work includes numerous documentaries and music films in the field of classical music, as well as a screen adaptation of Dostoevsky’s The Grand Inquisitor. Combining cinematic craftsmanship with a strong artistic sensibility, he explores the intersections of music, literature, and human experience.

We invite you to enter the world of Parajanov’s visionary imagination through an artistic experience of exceptional refinement and contemporary creativity.
